Comic Con 09

Etter fjordårets the Gathering måtte ledelsen gå et par runder med regjeringen for å få bekreftet gamer.nos slagord: “Spill er kultur”. Ledelsen fryktet at de måtte betale moms, noe som hadde betydd slutten for Norges desidert største, årlige ansamling av nerder. Det er det eneste vi har av slikt i Norge.

I USA derimot finnes det lass på lass av slike messer, går jeg ut fra. Den eneste jeg kjenner til er en av de mer sære, men også en av de største og mest kjente. Den heter Comic Con og finner sted i San Diego. Den er helt nylig over og alt jeg har er videoer. Men det ser jo utrolig festlig ut. Om du tilfeldigvis ikke skulle ha noen interesse for tegneserier finnes det etter hvert veldig mye annet. På Comic Con henger ikke folk seg opp i om ting egentlig er beregnet for de under 12. Tegneserier blir satt pris på som litteratur, en fortelling og, i sikkert noen tilfeller, et kunstverk. Og likedan er det med filmer. Animasjon er nummer en, men kjente regissører som Tim Burton blir satt stor pris på.

Min interesse for USA er svært liten samtidig som den er svært stor. Jeg har hørt utrykket: “Det eneste problemet med Tyskland er at det er for mange tyskere der.” Jeg mener dette om USA. Deg forunderlig hvordan deres måte å se en hel del ting på er annerledes enn vår. Jeg tror kapitalismen som er tydeligst i USA (den finnes i Norge også) er grunnen til de fleste store selskapene innen moderne teknologi kommer fra dette landet. Så om jeg skulle reise til USA, skulle det være for å delta på Comic Con eller WWDC. To steder der ikke har noe å gjøre, men som begge ser ut til å ha en kultur og stemning rundt seg som ligger veldig nært magisk.

Er du en nerd?

Dersom ingen av de kommende setningene lokker frem et lite hint av sinne og irritasjon som kaster deg ut i en vill krangel, der en slåsskamp er nærmeste nabo, så er du ikke en nerd. Ta det med ro. Viss ikke… Velkommen!

Geeks, as a general rule, are pretty easy-going. We like to think things through, so passionate confrontations aren’t commonplace for us. When we get well and properly provoked, though, watch out! We won’t stop talking until every last point that we can think of has been made at least twice. So, what do you say to provoke a geek? Glad you asked

10. “No real programmer would ever use PHP.” – This won’t work for every geek, of course, but for those it works on, it should work really well.

9. “Comic books are just for kids!” – I’m sure you’ve heard this one before—I know I certainly heard it often enough in high school, and even though it’s even less true now than it was then, I’m sure comic book afficionados still hear it today.

8. “Role-playing games are just for people who can’t deal with real life.” – There are, sadly, still a lot of people who think anyone who plays D&D must live in his parents’ basement and bathe once a month. Such people must be put straight, and immediately!

7. “The Pirates of the Caribbean movies are so realistic!” – I doubt many people actually believe this, but there are an awful lot of misconceptions about pirates out there, so you never know.

6. “Yeah, I got an Xbox 360 so my daughter could play Hello Kitty games. Is it really good for anything else?” – We’ve hit the ones that are hard for me even to type, now…

5. “Mac, Windows, or Linux? Does it really make a difference?” – An argument so old its original form was probably first written down in hieroglyphs, I know, but I don’t know a single geek it wouldn’t work on—myself included.

4. “The Ewoks were the best thing about the original Star Wars trilogy.” / “Greedo shot first!” – I couldn’t decide between the two. If one doesn’t work, I’ll bet the other one would.

3. “Tolkien? Ehhh, I prefer Terry Brooks!” – I almost feel like I should argue with myself just for writing that. I’m going to let the top two stand for themselves.

Støvsuger med begrenset slange?!

Det var da en merkelig ting å si om en støvsuger. Skulle også hatt en sånn støvsuger med ubegrenset rekkevidde. Det hadde vært fint.

Livet er et spill

Mye er sterkt undervurdert. Kanskje er dataspill en av dem.

Everyone complains about “e-mail overload” — getting so much stupid corporate e-mail that you miss out on important messages. But Byron Reeves has figured out a way to solve the problem.

How? By turning corporate e-mail into a game.

Reeves, a communications professor at Stanford, had studied the spectacularly popular online game World of Warcraft, and he knew that people inside the game place enormous value on the game’s artificial currency of gold pieces. They’ll go on quests and spend hours doing boring tasks just to earn it. That gave him an idea: Why not create a system where users earn virtual currency by intelligently using e-mail?

So Reeves’ firm, Seriosity, built a system — dubbed “Attent” — that does this. Every employee is given virtual tokens — say, 100 a week, — that they can attach to e-mail they write. If you really want someone to read a message now, you attach a lot of tokens, and the message pops up higher in your correspondent’s Outlook inbox. Reeves figured this would encourage people to send less e-mail: Those who are parsimonious would wind up with lots of tokens, which means when they really have something to say, they can load it up with tokens and make sure it’ll get through. Sure enough, that’s what happened. When a work group at IBM tried out Attent, messages with 20 tokens attached were 52 percent more likely to be quickly opened than normal. E-mail overload ceased to be a problem.

“What we’ve proven is that games can change behavior,” Reeves says.
